Created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, the critically acclaimed crime drama Ozark’s first season focuses on financial advisor Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman). His seemingly stable Chicago life unravels when a partner’s betrayal threatens their money laundering operation for a powerful Mexican cartel. To avoid execution, Marty makes a desperate pitch: establish a larger, more complex laundering operation in the Missouri Ozarks, abruptly relocating his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) and children Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) into a world defined by constant peril and moral ambiguity.

Debuting on Netflix on July 21, 2017, the inaugural season follows the Byrdes navigating the unfamiliar territory of the Lake of the Ozarks, a region known for its cash-heavy tourism but insular local culture. They must quickly contend with suspicious residents, entrenched local crime elements like the Snells and Langmores, and encroaching FBI scrutiny, all while scrambling to meet the cartel’s deadly deadlines. Season 1 garnered positive critical reviews, particularly lauded for its tense atmosphere, dark tone, and compelling performances from Bateman (earning Emmy nominations for acting and directing), Linney, and breakout star Julia Garner as the fiercely intelligent Ruth Langmore.

Cartel Trouble Forces Relocation

Marty Byrde, a Chicago-based financial advisor, operates a seemingly legitimate firm alongside his partner, Bruce Liddell (Josh Randall). Together, they clandestinely launder money for a Mexican drug cartel led by Camino “Del” Del Rio (Esai Morales). Their operation is bolstered by several associates, notably Hanson Sr. (Clayton Rohner), the owner of a trucking company, and his son, Hanson Jr. (Eric Mendenhall), who assist in transporting and concealing the illicit funds. The laundering scheme appears seamless, with each member playing a crucial role in maintaining the facade of legitimacy.

Simultaneously, Marty’s personal life is fraught with tension. He discovers through a private investigator named Bob Lily (Allan Edwards) that his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) is engaged in an affair with Gary “Sugarwood” Silverberg (Bruce Altman). Despite this painful revelation, Marty maintains a facade of normalcy, even fantasizing about reciprocating the betrayal, though he ultimately refrains from acting on these impulses. This internal turmoil adds another layer of complexity to Marty’s already precarious situation, as he grapples with both professional and personal betrayals.

The situation takes a dire turn when Del arrives in Chicago to confront Marty and his associates about missing cartel funds. In a chilling display, Del gathers the group and recounts a story about Aunt Carlotta, a longtime employee of his father’s store who was caught stealing USD 5 to help her sick child. Del poses a question to the group: should she have been forgiven or fired? Most, including Bruce and the Hansons, suggest leniency, advocating for forgiveness. However, Del reveals that Aunt Carlotta had likely stolen before and that being caught was merely the first time, not the only time.

This story serves as a chilling metaphor for the current situation, subtly warning the group that betrayal carries lethal consequences. Del implies that someone among them has been skimming money from the cartel, much like Aunt Carlotta had likely stolen long before she was caught. The room grows tense as the implication sinks in. Eventually, Bruce breaks down and confesses to embezzling USD 8 million over the past three years, claiming that Marty had no knowledge of the scheme. Despite Bruce’s attempt to protect his partner, Del remains unmoved. In a swift and brutal display of the cartel’s zero-tolerance policy, he executes Bruce, along with Hanson Sr. and Jr.

Marty, paralyzed by shock and fear, is left as the sole survivor—a grim warning of the cartel’s merciless enforcement of loyalty. In a desperate bid to save his life, Marty proposes a new plan: relocating to the Lake of the Ozarks to launder money for the cartel. He argues that the area’s abundance of cash-heavy businesses and relative obscurity make it an ideal location for such operations. Intrigued by the proposal, Del grants Marty 48 hours to recover the stolen funds and another 48 hours to move his family to the Ozarks, setting the stage for the Byrde family’s relocation and the ensuing events.

After the deadly encounter where Del kills Bruce and others for embezzling cartel money, Marty returns home to inform Wendy about the situation. He prepares their children for an immediate move to the Ozarks, proposing to launder USD 8 million to appease the cartel. Marty liquidates their assets, withdraws their savings, and collects money to repay Del. Wendy initially resistant to the move, plans to escape with their children and her lover, Gary. Wendy’s escape plan is thwarted when Del intervenes by killing her lover, Gary. Del orders Wendy to remain with Marty, forcing the family to stay together.

Establishing Operations in Ozarks

Marty delivers the recovered money to Del, who then returns it as a test of Marty’s commitment. Del wants to verify if Marty is sincere about laundering money for the cartel before the family relocates to the Ozarks. Upon arriving at the Ozarks, the Byrde family stays at a motel where they encounter the Langmore family, locals who become significant in their lives. Marty hides the cash under the bed in their motel room and instructs his children, Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner ), not to leave the room or allow housekeeping inside under any circumstances.

Marty begins exploring local businesses in the Ozarks to find suitable fronts for laundering money. He takes a particular interest in the Blue Cat Lodge, a struggling lakeside inn and restaurant, seeing potential in revitalizing it to serve his purposes. Simultaneously, Wendy searches for a permanent residence for the family, eventually securing a lakefront property with the condition that the terminally ill owner, Buddy Dieker (Harris Yulin), continues living in the basement. As they navigate these new ventures, tensions between Marty and Wendy escalate, leading them to establish a strictly professional relationship.

During one of Marty’s business trips, Ruth Langmore breaks into their motel room and steals a portion of the hidden cash. When Marty discovers the theft, he confronts the Langmore family and risks his life to recover the money. Through this encounter, Ruth learns that Marty is laundering money for a drug cartel, information she plans to use to her advantage. Ruth approaches Marty, demanding employment and arguing that keeping her close is safer than having her as an adversary.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Roy Petty (Jason Butler Harner) initiates an investigation into the Navarro cartel’s operations and becomes suspicious of Marty Byrde’s abrupt relocation from Chicago to the Ozarks. Recognizing the potential for uncovering a significant money laundering operation, Petty follows Marty to the Ozarks to gather evidence and build a case against him. Observing Marty’s rapid establishment of multiple cash-heavy businesses in the area, Petty’s suspicions deepen, prompting him to intensify his surveillance efforts.

Expanding Laundering Amid Conflicts

After moving into their new home, Wendy overwhelmed by her children’s questions, reveals the truth about their situation, that Marty is laundering money for a drug cartel, which prompted their relocation from Chicago. Marty focuses on restructuring the Blue Cat Lodge to optimize it for money laundering, while Wendy hires their real estate broker, Sam Dermody (Kevin L. Johnson), to assist with their operations. Ruth, aiming to learn Marty’s money laundering techniques, secures a job as a dishwasher at the Blue Cat Lodge. She plans to gain his trust, acquire his knowledge, and eventually kill him to take his money.

Agent Petty continues his investigation, closely monitoring Marty’s activities and interactions. Marty plans to purchase a local strip club, Lickety Splitz, to expand his laundering operation. However, the owner Bobby Dean (Adam Boyer) refuses to sell. Ruth assists Marty by planting drugs in Bobby’s office, leading to Bobby’s arrest. Marty then acquires the club legally by bailing Bobby out and taking control of the business. He discovers that Bobby had been laundering money for local heroin producers, Jacob (Peter Mullan) and Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery).

After his release from jail, Bobby meets with the Snells, who are displeased with his loss of the strip club. In response, they kill Bobby. When questioned by the police, Marty presents the legal paperwork for the club’s purchase, demonstrating he had no motive for Bobby’s death. Jacob Snell later approaches Marty to propose a partnership, which Marty initially declines, wary of entangling himself further in the Snells’ illicit heroin operations.

Charlotte and Jonah begin forming friendships with the Langmore children, particularly Wyatt (Charlie Tahan) and Three (Carson Holmes), gradually integrating into the local community. Recognizing the need to solidify his presence, Marty seeks to align with local authorities to operate effectively. He approaches Pastor Mason Young (Michael Mosley) with a proposal to build a church, intending to use it as a front for laundering money. Unbeknownst to Marty, the Snells are already exploiting Pastor Mason’s floating church services to distribute heroin.

Ruth Langmore gradually earns Marty’s trust and is promoted to manager of the strip club, Lickety Splitz. She transforms it into a successful business. Still planning to steal Marty’s money, Ruth follows him to locate where he keeps his cash. She also begins to assert more control over the club’s operations, demonstrating her growing ambition and capability. Meanwhile, Agent Petty continues his investigation and manipulates Russ Langmore (Marc Menchaca) into a relationship, aiming to use him to gather information about Marty.

The Snells, who use Pastor Mason’s sermons on the lake for their heroin distribution, confront Marty. They demand he stop the construction of Mason’s new church, as it interferes with their operation, and implicitly threaten the safety of the pastor’s pregnant wife, Grace (Bethany Anne Lind), if the project continues. Marty attempts to comply with their demands to protect Mason and Grace. Simultaneously, Marty faces mounting pressure from Del who urges him to expedite the money laundering process.

Betrayals Fuel Desperate Measures

Buddy discovers incriminating evidence on Marty’s laptop, uncovering the depth of the Byrdes’ criminal activities. Concerned about the implications, he confronts Marty, emphasizing the risks involved. Ruth, under pressure from her incarcerated father Cade (Trevor Long), devises a plan to kill Marty and steal his money. She rigs the dock with an electrified trap, testing it by dropping a live wire into the water and observing a mouse’s fatal reaction. However, Agent Petty surveilling Ruth, disables the trap before Marty arrives, thwarting her plan. Unaware of the sabotage, Ruth is shocked when Marty emerges unharmed, leading her to suspect interference.

Rachel Garrison (Jordana Spiro), the owner of the Blue Cat Lodge, becomes suspicious of Marty’s activities and confronts him about his behavior. Charlotte, overwhelmed by the family’s situation, attempts to run away but is stopped by her father. Meanwhile, conflict with the Snells escalates, and Wendy becomes increasingly concerned for her family’s safety. To protect his wife, Marty withdraws USD 700,000 from Del’s money and gives it to the Snells, trying to convince them to halt the church construction.

Marty informs Pastor Mason that the Snells will harm his pregnant wife Grace if he continues preaching on the lake. Pastor Mason confronts the Snells, who reveal that Marty intended to use the church construction for money laundering. Feeling betrayed and devastated, Pastor Mason abandons his ministry and burns down the church framework, symbolizing the collapse of his faith and trust.

Flashback reveals Wendy suffered a miscarriage following a car accident, leading to a prolonged period of depression. This emotional trauma significantly impacted her relationship with Marty and influenced their subsequent decisions, including their involvement in laundering money for the cartel. Meanwhile, Pastor Mason’s background, highlighting his transformation into a lakeside preacher after surviving a near-fatal shooting during a robbery attempt in St. Louis, which he interpreted as a divine sign. Additionally, Buddy is introduced as a character with a criminal past who becomes an unexpected ally to the family.

Concurrently, Marty orchestrates a scheme to recover funds by manipulating Eugenia Dermody, the mother of his associate Sam. He persuades her to invest USD 900,000 into a fraudulent investment fund, enabling him to reclaim money previously given to the Snells and fulfill his obligation to launder the first million dollars for the cartel. This maneuver not only showcases Marty’s cunning but also sets the stage for the complex dynamics and moral ambiguities that define the series.

Del is pleased with Marty’s progress and provides him with USD 50 million to continue laundering operations. The Snells remain unhappy about the church funding issue. Meanwhile, the Byrde family works together to properly wrap and hide the cash. When Eugenia dies in an accident, Marty offers to cover the funeral expenses instead of returning her investment. Wendy purchases a funeral home, seeing it as another potential business for money laundering. Marty reaches out Bob for help protecting the family as their situation becomes increasingly dangerous.

Agent Petty reveals his identity to Russ, confessing that their romantic relationship was a calculated manipulation to get to Ruth and, through her, to Marty. Feeling betrayed and desperate, Russ enlists his brother Boyd (Christopher James Baker) to help kill Marty and flee with the laundered money. Ruth, discovering the plan, sets a trap by rigging an electrical setup at the dock. When Russ and Boyd attempt to execute their plan, they’re both electrocuted and killed, effectively dismantling Petty’s investigation strategy.

Pastor Mason, disturbed by the growing number of addicts attending his sermons on the water, realizes his floating church is being used as a front for the Snells’ heroin operation. When he refuses to continue cooperating, the Snells abduct his pregnant wife, Grace. They later return his baby alone, implying they killed Grace for disobedience. When Mason comes home, he finds only his infant son, with no sign of Grace.

As the Byrdes prepare to flee the Ozarks, cartel enforcer Garcia (Joseph Melendez) threatens their safety. In a tense confrontation, Buddy kills Garcia with a shotgun to protect Wendy and the children. Marty and Buddy then dispose of Garcia’s body at a funeral home that Wendy had acquired for laundering purposes. After Garcia’s sudden disappearance, Del grows increasingly suspicious and confronts Marty, seeking answers.

To extract information, Del resorts to brutal methods, forcibly removing Marty’s toenails with pliers in a harrowing scene that underscores the cartel’s ruthlessness. Despite the excruciating pain, Marty remains composed and seizes the opportunity to propose a new venture, constructing a riverboat casino on the Snells’ land. He explains that this establishment would serve as a substantial money laundering operation, benefiting both the cartel and the Snells. Marty emphasizes the strategic advantage of the location, noting that the proximity to the Missouri River would make the casino legally viable.

Del, intrigued by the potential profits and the plan’s ingenuity, agrees to consider the proposal, setting the stage for a pivotal meeting with the Snells. Marty and Del meet with Jacob and Darlene Snell to discuss the casino project. During the meeting, Del refers to the Snells as “rednecks,” which deeply offends Darlene. In retaliation, she shoots and kills Del. Jacob assures Marty that they’ve already finalized the deal with Del’s boss and that Marty shouldn’t worry about repercussions.

In the final scene of Season 1, Marty lies outside his house, deep in thought, reflecting on the tumultuous events that have unfolded. As he contemplates the future, Wendy and their children, Charlotte and Jonah, join him. They sit together, embracing in a moment of unity and reaffirming their commitment to stay together despite the escalating dangers surrounding them.
